all the non-adventurous eaters can just skip this post right now.
i warned you.
no, really.
hakka people are part of the han chinese ethnic group (can you tell i wikipedia-ed this?). my dad is hakka, but unfortunately i’m a useless chinese person and don’t know anything about the hakka culture. in fact i only tried hakka food [...]
lau’s family kitchen, st kilda

we were hosting a dinner for some family friends and thought that this was the best time to try lau’s (4 acland street, st kilda 03 8598 9880). the son of Gilbert Lau (of Flower Drum fame) co-owns the joint and works the floor. according to a 2006 Epicure review Gilbert’s brother runs point in [...]

i think i may have said this before but when i was young, all i wanted was western food. that or mcdonalds, really. but since i moved over to australia 8 years ago and my access to authentic asian food was cut off, everytime i find a decent malaysian meal i’m hooked.
when any of my [...]
yoshi, again
Posted in japanese, melbourne on January 25, 2009 | 3 Comments »
k’s parents arrived two saturdays ago and requested dinner at yoshi immediately after we picked them up from the airport. i’ve written about yoshi before (with really bad pictures) here, so i’m happy to say that the shots from this dinner are much clearer. more or less the same dishes though, sorry for the lack [...]

i’m always on the lookout for authentic hawker cuisine in melbourne. laksa king doesn’t really do it for me, although i must say their hainanese chicken chilli is the garlickiest chilli sauce i have ever tasted. the garlic burps are pretty bloody powerful too…
a malaysian girlfriend recommended the old raffles place (706 johnston street, collingwood [...]
caffe e cucina, south yarra

caffe e cucina (581 chapel street, south yarra 03 9827 4139) is definitely one of my favourite italian restaurants. i’ve been here a few times now and have never been disappointed. unfortunately though i’ve never managed to take a picture at this place for some reason. 2 nights ago was no different, sorry!
i met michelle [...]
fun in the kitchen – spaghetti marinara
Posted in eating in on January 20, 2009 | Leave a Comment »
k’s mum loves the seafood here, which is of a much higher quality (and better price) than what Perth has to offer. Every time she comes over i normally make her a spaghetti marinara. The seafood shop on the corner opposite the cafe at the Prahran markets has the best marinara mix, where huge prawns [...]

the outlaws are here, so i’ll have to postpone posts for a bit. but over the last couple of days we’ve been to Yoshi (yes, ah-gain), Lau’s Family Kitchen which i was very impressed with, and i made spaghetti marinara last night. no doubt there’ll be plenty more outings over the next couple of weeks, [...]
ajisen ramen, melbourne
Posted in japanese, melbourne on January 17, 2009 | 1 Comment »
We hadn’t seen two fellow Perthies for a while, so we made plans to catch up with them after work on Friday. Clare & Marv suggested Ajisen Ramen (130 Bourke Street, Melbourne 03 9662 1100) so off we went.
Because we had quite a bit to catch up on I didn’t manage to examine the vast [...]
