after i told j about my dinner at horoki last month, she asked me to take her there when she came over. and so i did!
we enjoyed serves of the tuna carpaccio, daikon salad with sashimi, garlic octopus, duck and diced scotch fillet, all of which were as good as last time. in addition, we [...]

Posted in japanese, melbourne on February 28, 2009 | 1 Comment »
xm told me about ramen-ya (g25 postal lane, GPO, 350 Bourke Street 03 9654 5838) a while back but while i always wanted to go and try it, something better than ramen always emerged as the top choice for lunch or dinner.
until j came over for the weekend. we drank so much the night before [...]
what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Posted in random ramblings on February 28, 2009 | 2 Comments »
i’ve got pics from dinner at Match (QV) coming up along with a few dishes i made over the week, but in the meantime what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? i’d love to know! (escargots and chicken feet don’t count).
as far as i can remember my weirdest would be turtle soup… other people may [...]

how could i not go without dessert after such an amazing dinner?
we started off with a complimentary strawberry parfait each which was a nice surprise.
a shot of kean’s affogato…
we were trying to figure out what was off with the affogato when the waitress admitted that they had run out of vanilla ice cream and strawberry [...]

after the entrees came our mains.
a couple of the boys ordered the western plains suckling pig, pork pie, pickled mussels, cockles and pea vinaigrette.
i managed to have a tiny bite of the pork which was lovely.
the fish special was an atlantic salmon with salmon roe and a zucchini mousse. i thought the zucchini mousse was [...]

i headed to circa (2 acland street, st kilda 03 9536 1122) for j’s engagement dinner last week. circa sits inside a boutique hotel and while i didn’t manage to explore much, from what i saw this place is certainly a hidden gem. the bartender whipped up a mean mojito while we waited for the [...]

fun in the kitchen – roast lamb and potatoes with onion gravy

i think i was being a bit ambitious with this one on a weeknight. there was a great cut of meat at coles so i couldn’t resist, but one thing about roasts – it’s dead easy, but you need to be patient which is a bit tough when you want to eat at 7.30 on [...]

hellenic republic (434 lygon street, brunswick east 03 9381 1222) is the pauper’s version of the melbourne press club which is also on my list of places to visit this year. i hadn’t been to a proper greek restaurant prior to this so i didn’t really know what i should be expecting besides dolmades or [...]
fun in the kitchen – pork and cabbage tikka masala
Posted in eating in on February 15, 2009 | 1 Comment »
i’m not usually this lazy and i’ve also probably violated all sorts of tikka masala codes using pork and cabbage but sometimes you just can’t be arsed after a long, painful day at work.
i fried some pork strips in a touch of olive oil…
before adding some hand-torn cabbage. for some weird reason hand torn cabbage [...]
